Abstract

The Urban Life of Frederiksberg Centret
In her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities Jane Jacobs
identified the factors she considered vital to establishing and maintaining
a vital urban life. Her emphasis on vital urban life has become
a standard for contemporary urban development, and new urban
districts often appear to follow her ideas. However, the shopping centre,
as a competing focus for urban life, also mimics Jacobs urban
ideal, but in a situation removed from the historical and traditional
urban situation. The article discusses whether the urban area around
Frederiksberg Centret shopping centre corresponds to Jacobs
determining factors, or if the conceptual model applied is a formal
imitation of a vital urban district inspired by the shopping centre.
