The Household and Family as Objects for the Study of Life-Forms

The purpose of this article is to do a critical analysis of a mode of life approach in studies of household strategies. The mode of life approach here referred to is rooted in social anthropology and has been developed to analyze household strategies for making a living within local cultural settings. These types of analyses have been male based, as the subsistence work done by men has been regarded as more important for the creation of local culture and for the standard of living of the household. In later studies researchers have extended the application of the mode of life approach to analyses of everyday life of households in their own right. This has made the gender dimension more central in the analysis. Another consequence has been that the unit of analysis - the household or the individual - has to be dealt with in a more careful way. A conclusion to be drawn is that theories of household strategies have to be integrated with theories of gender and family.

Syftet med denna artikel är att pröva livsformsansatsens användbarhet för en familjesociologisk analys. Detta sker genom en diskussion av förhållandet mellan hushåll, kön och familj i studiet av hushållens livsformer. Livsformsbegreppet utvecklades för att göra analyser av lokala kulturer och försörjningssätt. I dessa analyser har ett manligt perspektiv dominerat, eftersom männens arbete har ansetts dominera hushållens försörjning. Senare har livsformsbegreppet utnyttjats för analyser av hushållens vardagsliv, där den lokala dimensionen har blivit en underordnad faktor. Hushållet som analysenhet i livsformsansatsen blir därmed problematisk att hantera, eftersom den könsspecifika dimensionen får en framskjuten ställning. Analyser av hushållens liv måste förankras i genusteori och familjeteori, hävdas i artikeln.
