Abstract

Historicism and Modernism in the Historiography
of Modern Architecture
While the critique of modernism is well established in architectural discourse, key modernist assertions remain virtually unchallenged even today. One such assertion is that of originality: the idea that modernism represented a radical break with the corrupt historicism of the 19th century. Using Sigfried Giedions Bauen in Frankreich as a vehicle, this essay argues that the modernist notions of break and novelty a new architecture for a new time are in fact historicist conceptions, fundamentally patterned on historicist ideas of epoch and Zeitgeist.
