Abstract

The final Testimony of Bourgeois Ambiguity: Tafuris Avant-Garde,
Revolution and Utopia
The article presents the Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuris Progetto e utopia in which Tafuri analyses the connections between the artistic and architectural avant-garde and capitalist planning. According to Tafuri the avant-garde was a complex phenomenon that in contradictory ways tried to register and work with the new urban reality of the early twentieth century. In an affirmative gesture the avant-garde tried to intensify the anxiety and solitude of the metropolis in order to create new life forms but according to Tafuri the avant-garde ended up paving the way for capitalisms rationalization of the urban space. In the article Tafuris analysis is discussed and compared to the situationists analysis of the spectacular market capitalism.
