Abstract

The final Testimony of Bourgeois Ambiguity: Tafuri’s Avant-Garde,
Revolution and Utopia
The article presents the Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri’s Progetto e utopia in which Tafuri analyses the connections between the artistic and architectural avant-garde and capitalist planning. According to Tafuri the avant-garde was a complex phenomenon that in contradictory ways tried to register and work with the new urban reality of the early twentieth century. In an affirmative gesture the avant-garde tried to intensify the anxiety and solitude of the metropolis in order to create new life forms but according to Tafuri the avant-garde ended up paving the way for capitalism’s rationalization of the urban space. In the article Tafuri’s analysis is discussed and compared to the situationists’ analysis of the spectacular market capitalism.
