Abstract


On coffee and public space
This article investigates the use of coffee bars as public places. Coffee
bars are essential features of modern cities. Since the beginning of
the 1990-ties the growth of coffee bars in the western word has been
tremendous. To study coffee bars as a part of a spaltial practices in
an urban environment is therefore a way of understanding the use
of space. There are several theories of public space, some normative,
others descriptive. In this article I focus upon the descriptive theories.
I discuss the different theories in the light of the coffee bars, and in
which degree they stimulate a public life. The article is exploring the
spaltial practices and how the can be interpreted in the shed of a wide
assortment of theories of public space.
